Best Hand Tools

Paige Hemmis

Paige Hemmis, star of ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and author of The Tuff Chix Guide to Easy Home Improvement, talks about the best hand tools and accessories no one should be without.

1. Cordless Drill

Also called a screw gun

At the top of her list of the best hand tools and accessories, Paige says, "Drills are great because you can change the bits to do what you need quickly and easily. Although this is not a new invention, new attachments are always becoming available. Many new drill sets come complete with two power packs and an assortment of drill bits."

2. Tool belt

Paige explains, "A tool belt is a must. It holds everything you need for the day. I designed my Tuff Chix tool belt to hold everything I need without weighing me down, including essential tools like my multi-tool and my cell phone. This tool belt also looks great and passes as a stylish accessory. Who says girls can't be tough and cute?"

3. 6-in-1 Screwdriver

Also called a multi-tool

To explain why this is one of the best hand tools, Paige offers, "This multi-purpose tool is great. It's basically a screwdriver with six different sizes so you are always prepared. It works in a pinch on just about everything and it fits in your purse! They come in a variety of colors at your favorite home improvement store. I prefer the decorative version and for less than $5, it's a great gift for everyone you know."

4. Stud Finder

Paige says, "This is an essential tool, especially for anyone who wants to hang art or framed photos. I recommend one that is a level and a stud finder, a must for securing large or heavy hanging objects in your home. Since we women are always redecorating, this is a handy item to have around."

5. Portable Scaffold

In Paige's opinion, "Scaffolding that is lightweight, foldable and portable is great for making repairs to your home. It is affordable and doesn't take up much space. Scaffold will run about $100 but keep in mind that safety is a value at any price."
